The material value accounts for only 25 to 75 percent of the final price, depending on the segment. The rest goes to fabrication, consultation, warranty and the jeweler's margin. Online retailers work with lower markups (approx. 30%), while premium jewelers charge 3 to 4 times the material value.
Platinum was more expensive than gold for decades — currently it's surprisingly affordable (approx. €32/g vs. €90/g for fine gold). However, Platinum 950 is denser, making rings of the same dimensions heavier and therefore more expensive. Alternative materials like titanium or carbon are nearly free in terms of material, but fabrication costs are similar.
The material costs are based on daily exchange prices and are very accurate. The market price estimate shows a range — the actual price depends on the jeweler, region and quality of craftsmanship.
Jewelers with a physical store, personal consultation and workshop have higher costs than online retailers. A markup of 50-100% above material value is normal and includes service, warranty and adjustments.
The number indicates the gold content in thousandths: 333 = 33.3% gold (8K), 585 = 58.5% (14K), 750 = 75% (18K). Higher gold content means more intense color and higher price, but also softer material. 585 gold is the German standard for wedding rings.
Surprisingly, platinum is currently cheaper per gram than Gold 585. But: platinum is significantly denser, making a ring of the same size 50-60% heavier. Overall, platinum rings are often similarly priced to gold rings.

In Germany, 585 gold (14K) is the most common choice, offering a great balance between durability and value. 750 gold (18K) has a higher gold content and looks more premium but is slightly softer. For tighter budgets, 333 gold (8K) is often used – it's more durable but less rich in color. Overall, 585 is considered the best all-round option.
